I’ve been showing these a lot in my videos recently and have had many questions about how to do them. Basically, it’s a single crochet hat with 3-4 strands of yarn held together. Use a hook you’re comfortable with. (I use a “P” 12mm with 4 strands of worsted weight and adjust my hook size based on the overall weight/feel of all the strands held together.)
Not enough information for you? Maybe this video will help:
Here’s a written pattern to use as a guide:
STOP and measure your Flat Circle Diameter and refer to the chart below for sizing! If you need it larger, continue your increase rounds (increasing by 1 sc in each *repeat group* as you did above).
Subsequent Rounds: 1 sc in each stitch until you are approximately .5″ from the desired Hat Height.
Slip Stitch about 6 stitches to even out the bottom edge of the hat.
Last Round: sc blo ; fasten off; sew in ends.
Note that the chart I refer to in this video is not available in its original form so I’ve updated it (and made a few alterations) and you can find it here: Hat Sizing Charts.
Have you ever uploaded a tutorial on the great flowers you put on your hats? If so did please let me know which one and if not would please make one. Thanks. Barb Fessler
No, I haven’t because the pattern isn’t mine. I’d have to acquire special permission from the designer if I were to do that. However, there are plenty of great flower tutorials already on YouTube!
Do you have any links or done any videos on how to make a jumper or vest on the addi kingsize? I can’t knit with needles so any help with the addi would be great. I follow you on pintrest and YouTube. Thank you
No, I haven’t and don’t know anyone who has however, there may be instructions in one of the Addi Express Pattern Books. (Do a Google search!)
Margaret: I have been selling these hats at work as fast as I can make them! One woman came to me and asked if I could make her a “messy bun” hat that has a hole on top for a bun or pony tail, but it has to be stretchy. I used this pattern, except I started with a 2″ in diameter covered pony tail loop. I crocheted 12 single crochets over the loop and followed the rest of the pattern. She loved it and now everyone wants one. Please feel free to share this with your audience.
Lindaann! How clever! Thanks for letting me know about all your happy customers and especially your new messy bun model! I love smart people!
I’ve never knit or crocheted with more than 2 skeins, and found that to be a bit fiddly. Do you have any tips for how you keep your four separate balls/skeins from tangling up with each other while you’re crocheting the hat?
I have a problem knitting with more than 2 strands but I can crochet all day with it. Maybe it has to do with the way we hold the yarn… I don’t know! I don’t worry if it gets twisted together for this hat. I just cut it at the end and straighten the skeins before putting them away!
I mostly knit, just delving into learning to crochet, so maybe that will be the difference for me, too. Thanks!
PS- I love the hat, and your video makes it look so doable for me, a novice crocheter. Thanks for sharing!
I came across this pattern a few days ago and thought it might be fun. On Christmas Eve I accepted that my granddaughter’s present would not be arriving in time so I crocheted this hat to put in her bag along with pictures of her better-late-than-never gifts. She loved it! I’m not an experienced crocheter but this hat took me less than two hours!
I’m so glad you liked it, Elizabeth! It’s also a charity favorite because it’s so warm!!
